Two Potential Thesis Statements

1. Although societally acceptable, the pervasive obesity stigma in the US has devastating consequences on the emotional and physical well-being of obese individuals, which actually contribute to the obesity epidemic in this country.

2. Obesity stigma is a damaging reality that obese individuals face on a daily basis, and yet our society does not see it as a problem. Nonetheless, this discrimination has severe consequences on the emotional and physical well-being of these individuals, and it actually exacerbates this country's obesity epidemic.

  1. Hi Shira - Excellent topic! I really like your second thesis option. I think it's very well-developed and I feel I have a good sense of what you will be arguing in your paper. Additionally, it sparked the necessary interest to read more about what you will discuss in your research paper. Nice work!

  2. Hi Shira. Both of your thesis statements are very clear and strong. Like Ashley, I especially like the 2nd thesis statement--maybe because it starts with the words "obesity stigma." I am also a fan of the word "exacerbates."

I also love the topic and feel that it doesn't get enough attention. When I was in elementary school, I was pretty overweight (200 pounds and 4ft. tall). Pretty often, as I was walking home from elementary school, strangers who were driving by would unroll their car windows and shout hateful things at me.

  3. Shira,
Great job on both thesis statements! I agree with Ashley and Abby that the second statement is very well developed and really pulls the reader in. I look forward to reading your full paper!
